What you see on the stage does not match what your ears are hearing. It's just one guy with a acoustic guitar but it sounds like a entire band up there! You hear the percussion, melody, chord arrangement, bass line... it's all there. Slapping, tapping, banging, over the top of the fretboard, this guy is doing whatever it takes to make those sounds emerge from a single instrument. The show is energetic and fast paced and the person up there doing it all looks like he'd be more at home at a Heavy Metal festival than a acoustic guitar concert.
Yep, no doubt about it. You've just stumbled into a Chris Brown concert!
Chris plays a unclassifiable style of instrumental acoustic guitar music which has to be heard to be believed and seen live to be fully appreciated. With all of the different musical influences that have fused themselves into Chris' creative psyche and the many unusual experiences of his life, it's not that difficult to understand why this unique style of music comes from his mind and soul.
Chris started playing the guitar at the age of twelve. After learning his first four chords he began composing his own music, even with such limited knowledge of the instrument and at such a early age. Born in Savannah, GA but growing-up in Cumberland Gap, TN Chris spent most of his time in the hills of Appalachia learning his guitar craft. Also as a teenager, he developed the style of acoustic guitar playing which has carried him on to a career in music. However, acoustic guitar was not always his instrument of choice.
Before he ever picked-up a guitar, Chris developed a love of Heavy Metal music as a child. So, understandably, when he began playing guitar later in life he gravitated toward that style of music first. Becoming a proficient and well-known Metal guitarist in his hometown, Chris constantly played in local bands and sessions. But as much as he loved playing this kind of music, it was not what he played or wrote best. That would be reserved for the acoustic stylings which were always present within his music. However, the technical skills and dexterity he acquired while playing Metal would continue to benefit him throughout his musical career.
At nineteen, Chris left home and moved to Murfreesboro, TN just outside of Nashville to begin his actual music career. Things did not go smoothly for the first few years. The music scene throughout the country was changing from technical, formulated music to the much less involved styles which were emerging from Grunge and College scenes. Chris continued to play his style of music without compromise regardless of the trends. Some nights were successful and some were not but he was determined to stay his course and play the music he felt was right for him.
Times change and so do people's cultural tastes. Proving that he is willing to weather any storm for the sake of his music, Chris is now beginning to see the fruits of his labor. A growing fan base, regional touring, and recent and upcoming CD releases are sure signs that success is just a stones-throw away for Chris and his music of choice. Be sure to catch his show when he comes to your town. You won't regret a minute spent enjoying this guitarist and his own brand of acrobatic acoustic stylings!
